Ethan's Birthday Party with Grammy

Happy 1st Birthday to Ethan...again! Grammy came for Memorial Day weekend to celebrate his birthday with us. It was a nice quiet weekend of party fun (both Ethan's birthday party and Olivia's preschool party) and playing.

Here is the family with the birthday boy!

He was an old pro with his cake at this party. I don't think that he'll need help eating it again!

The aftermath of the cake. How does one slice of cake multiply into such a huge mess?

Opening presents with Grammy. She, Brennan, and Grandpa Brett (who was in California with a previous engagement) bought some great gifts for him. A ride on toy, clothes, lots of toys, books, and more. Both Ethan and Olivia were in heaven.

Olivia and Grammy Play-Doh time!

The result of a busy weekend with Grammy. The day that she left, Ethan fell asleep at his highchair at lunchtime.

Olivia's Preschool Party

Olivia's preschool "graduation" party was Saturday at an Iowa City rec center. All of the kids sang songs in English and Spanish that they had learned in preschool, and danced to their favorite tunes. It was great to watch her having such a good time with all of her friends and really hamming it up for the crowd. In our opinion, she had the best moves of anyone! The 4 year old children received a diploma, while Olivia will receive a certificate of participation. Olivia really came full circle in school this year. The first few months had me wondering if she would ever enjoy herself at school, and the last few months had me wondering if she missed me while she was there since the drop off consisted of her running in and not looking back!

Olivia and her friends McKenna and Mana had a great time dancing together after the dinner. We were among the last to leave due to Olivia having such a good time playing (which also meant that we were recruited to help clean up!).

Fun at the Beach

We joined my entire family for a five day getaway to Marco Island, Florida. My first time to Marco was about 20+ years ago (hard to believe!) and I have probably been there about 10 times since. Hopefully the kids can continue to enjoy Marco as they grow older, too. There is really not too much to do on Marco other than eat at good seafood restaurants, sit on the beach, sit by the pool, or walk on the beach. Not too bad of a way to spend your day!

We have arrived! A family photo outside of the Snook Inn restaurant at sunset. Both kids did relatively well on the flight to Florida. In the days before leaving, we explained to Olivia that she would be going on a plane and all that she could expect to happen. The night before leaving, she asks "mommy, how will we get on the plane?" So I explained the airport to her (again). Then she asked "but mommy, how will we get up into the sky to get into the airplane?" I guess we had failed to mention that the plane starts on the ground and then flies into the sky! What a smart little girl!

Ethan and Aunt Rachel enjoying a night walk on the beach with everyone. Ethan really enjoyed the night walk and would splash in the ocean and be happy. However, the rest of the vacation he did not like the actual ocean (but he did like the sand!) and would cry if someone carried him too close. I guess he liked it best when he could not actually see the water?

A nap on the beach. Ethan slept very peacefully until the wind blew the towel and some sand all over him!

Fun in the ocean. Olivia did like the ocean and the sand - we weren't too sure about how she would react to the sand since she does not like it when she gets it in her shoes. Grandma and Joe spent a loooong time swinging her through the waves.

Olivia made a friend, Amber, the first day at the hotel. Here they are enjoying a "slushy" together. The next day they also had their hair braided in 2 matching beaded braids. The only hitch in their friendship is that Olivia preferred the beach, and Amber preferred the pool. We spent a lot of time going between those two places depending on Olivia's mood!

Is there anything better than a beach sunset with the one you love? Joe and I will celebrate 10 years of marriage in June.

Olivia and Ethan playing together in the sand. The one thing that I forgot to pack was Olivia's sunglasses, so she compensated by wearing mine.

Glamour girl on the beach.

Ethan in the sand. Luckily, he only ate the sand on the first day and then moved on to just eating the shovel.

Olivia and I playing in the sand. Olivia spent a lot of time burying her legs in the sand.

Ethan and Uncle Thomas outside of a restaurant on the Isle of Capri. They became great buds on the vacation.

Joe teaching Olivia the art of building a sandcastle.

Olivia then taught me how to build sandcastles! Then we did what everyone does, smashed them while pretending to be giants!

Joe and Ethan show off their hats.

A family photo in the ocean.

One restaurant we went to (Little Bar) had some really interesting statues outside. Olivia really wanted her picture taken in front of the mermaid.

Happy Birthday to Ethan!

Happy 1st birthday to Ethan! This is difficult for us to believe - our baby has turned 1! And the poor guy turned one in an airplane somewhere between Chicago and Florida. He has had a free for all of gift opening lately - some before we left for vacation, a party while on vacation, and another party coming up this weekend with Grammy. First things first...

One present from Grandma and Grandpa before his birthday. This one, plus the basketball hoop from them, were just a bit too big to take to Ethan's beach birthday party. Olivia and Ethan love playing on this together. Ethan can hardly wait to be able to get on and off by himself. But right now he mainly uses it as a push/walker toy.

This was Ethan's present from Joe and I. A large playhouse/ladder/slide/tunnel playset. We plan to put it outside at the new house. Ethan can crawl up the slide by himself, but he is not too steady on the ladder yet. It has since been turned into a pirate fort by Olivia.

Ethan loving his new toy.

More playing together. Olivia is having a bit of a difficult time watching Ethan receive presents and not her. Sibling rivalry was bound to begin at some point! Soon it will be her turn for a birthday...

On to Florida. Here are Ethan, Olivia, Joe, and Uncle Thomas before the cake. Even though we were on the beach, silly hats, noisemakers, and birthday plates were still required! His birthday theme was beach and ocean animals.

Ethan started slowly on the cake. He had had cake before, but this was his first taste of chocolate. Aunt Rachel had to help him get started on eating the cake.

After that first bite from Aunt Rachel, no more help was needed. Ethan made a huge mess of himself, as we had hoped. The chocolate was a huge success!

Cake + ice cream + sand = MESS!

We brought some small presents to the beach for him to open. It would not have been a party without something! He received great presents from everyone, and Olivia was more than willing to help him open them.

The aftermath of the party.

When we returned from Florida, Olivia gave Ethan a present that she picked out entirely on her own - a little walker with popping balls, a classic toy. Hopefully it will inspire him to take a step on his own! He is still holding out on us.

On the Move

On the move is the way to describe our family now. Preparing for the move back to Illinois (5 weeks and counting for Kate, 7 weeks for Joe) is one way that we are staying busy. Another is the increase in physical activity. Thank goodness for spring and nice warm days outside.

While I did not catch Ethan in the act this time, his new favorite activity is climbing on top of things. He will push this chair by himself to Olivia's bedside and then will climb from the chair to the bed. He is so proud of himself when he does this, too. This new game has kept me on the move keeping him safe.

Ethan has shown no interest at all in walking by himself. As eager as he was to start moving on his own, Joe and I thought for certain that he would be walking and/or running by now. We have tried many tactics to try and have him walk to us, but no luck. If he doesn't walk on his own in the next 2 weeks then it means that Olivia will have walked earlier than Ethan (she walked at 1 year and 1 week), which is something that we did not expect. Yes, yes, we know that you are not supposed to compare kids, but we all know that every parent does it! However, he will happily walk with a walker or while holding onto furniture. Here he is outside on the sidewalk in front of our house. He has become a regular fixture on the sidewalk the last few days, walking up and down the block.

Olivia joining in on the fun as well. She will be wrapping up her first year of preschool in the next few weeks. While it started off very rocky, it is ending on a high note. She loves her school now and happily talks about it on a regular basis. She claims to be very excited about the upcoming move back to her friends. She has very specific requests for her new bedroom...purple walls, white furniture, green bedspread, a pink pillow, blue sheets, and "all new books". I think we can accomodate everything except for the last request.

Olivia and Ethan racing each other down the sidewalk. They have become great playmates lately, even though we will need to intervene at times to remind Olivia that Ethan is still not able to play in the same way that she can.

Ahhh, sleep comes at last. While Ethan has not been the best sleeper in the world lately, we still can't complain about it too much.

A little video of Ethan and Olivia playing together outside. Olivia was pouting a bit in the shot due to the focus of the video not being exclusively on her.

This will be the last blog for a bit. We leave for Marco Island, Florida in one week for a full family vacation with my entire family. We will be celebrating Ethan's first birthday on the beach, so there will be lots of pictures upon our return!
